Sleeping Until Noon: Do you sleep until noon every day? Whether it’s due to habit or work schedules, have you ever considered the impact this sleep-morning pattern can have on your body and mental health?
According to Dr. Manjusha Agarwal, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine, Gleneagles Hospital, Mumbai, sleeping until noon for six months consistently can affect our body’s biological clock, the circadian rhythm. This internal clock regulates sleep, hormones, metabolism, and awareness.
Potential Health Effects

Dr. Agarwal says that if you’re getting a healthy 7–9 hours of sleep but go to bed too late, you may experience problems like social jet lag (inability to synchronize your time with normal daytime activities), decreased morning alertness, and difficulty concentrating during normal daytime hours.
Sleeping late leads to reduced exposure to morning sunlight, which can disrupt circadian rhythms and worsen mood swings, increase fatigue, and increase the risk of depression. Additionally, habits like eating late at night and exercising less during the day can lead to weight gain, insulin resistance, and changes in appetite-regulating hormones. Some studies also suggest that irregular or prolonged sleep may increase the risk of micro-inflammation and heart disease, although the cause-effect relationship is complex.
When to Consult a Doctor
Dr. Agarwal explains that this habit can lead to low vitamin D levels due to reduced sun exposure. It can also lead to strained social relationships, difficulty with tasks, and difficulty maintaining routines. If sleeping until noon is a sign of excessive sleepiness (hypersomnia) or is associated with persistent sadness, excessive daytime sleepiness, or decreased performance, consult a health professional immediately.
Lifestyle and Improvement Measures

To address this condition, it is crucial to pay attention to lifestyle. Weight management, regular exercise, a balanced diet, exposure to morning sunlight, and good sleep habits are all extremely beneficial. Drinking enough water and staying refreshed are also important for health.
