PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme: One crore families are the target
The central government anticipates that this scheme will help one crore families. Union New and Renewable Energy Minister Prahlad Joshi said during the states’ review meeting that the program is totally demand-based and that participants will be served in priority order. Several states have taken the effort to swiftly implement this system, including Andhra Pradesh.

For those who are excluded from this program due to a lack of housing, the government has approved the utility-led approach. This will enable people who rent or don’t have a roof to benefit from solar energy as well. The minister has called on the states to keep up their efforts and ensure that this initiative benefits the greatest number of individuals.
Electricity bill relief and a move toward renewable energy
According to the minister, almost 50% of the recipients have not yet received any electricity bills as a result of this effort. This proves that this program provides long-term energy security and stability in addition to financial aid.
Renewable energy’s main aims
550 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity are India’s goal by 2030. Non-fossil fuel-based installed capacity is now 251.5 gigawatts. Over the next five years, adding an additional 248 gigawatts presents both a difficulty and an opportunity.

The PM-KUSUM scheme’s next phase
The minister stated that after the current PM-KUSUM program ends in March 2026, preparations are being made to implement the Kusum 2.0 scheme. This will be done with the agreement of the national government. Furthermore, the GST on renewable energy services and equipment was recently reduced from 12% to 5%, which would make technologies like solar equipment, windmills, and biogas plants even more accessible.
