PM Suryaghar Yojana: To promote clean and affordable energy in the country, the central government launched the PM Suryaghar Yojana. The scheme aims to reduce electricity bills by half and provide solar energy to every household through the installation of small-scale solar plants. However, recent data shows that the scheme’s promotion and proper distribution of benefits remain challenging.
PM Suryaghar Yojana: The State of the Scheme in Korba

Korba district has approximately 150,000 domestic electricity consumers, but only 1,300 have applied for the scheme, and only 114 of them have received the subsidy. The main reasons for this are attributed to the complex scheme process and the lack of proper information.
PM Suryaghar Yojana: How is the Application Process Processed?
Under the PM Suryaghar Yojana, solar plants of one, two, and three kilowatt capacity can be installed. The 2-kilowatt plant is the most popular. The scheme provides a subsidy of ₹60,000 from the central government and ₹30,000 from the state government, totaling ₹90,000. However, due to technical and administrative hurdles, this benefit has so far reached only a limited number of people.
Consumers must apply through the central government’s national portal. The application process is somewhat complex and often requires expert assistance. After applying, a private vendor must be selected to install solar plants in their area. The vendor completes the entire process and submits the necessary documents for the subsidy to the department.
PM Suryaghar Yojana: Subsidy and Payment Challenges

The distribution of subsidies under the scheme is slow. Many people have received the central subsidy, but the state government subsidy is still awaited. Private vendors handle the entire installation and account verification process, while the electricity department only approves the application.
The PM Surya Ghar Yojana is an important initiative for clean energy and electricity savings, but administrative reforms and awareness campaigns are essential to ensure its benefits reach people in a timely manner. If the process is simplified and transparent, this scheme could pave the way for millions of homes to adopt solar energy and reduce electricity bills by half.
